Your Mind Is a Reflection of Everything You Know
Your mind holds the sum of all your memories, lessons, and life experiences. Every person you have met, every place you have been, and every event you have experienced has created a network of connections in your brain. These neurological networks are essentially the recordings of your past — the lens through which you see the present.
When you meet someone, your brain doesn’t start fresh. It pulls from stored experiences, shaping your perception of that person. Over time, repeated thoughts about them form beliefs — and a belief is simply a thought repeated over and over again.
Early Childhood: The Most Formative Years
"The first six years of a child’s life is like having a recorder on. Everything it sees,
smells, touches, experiences in any way, everything it hears, is downloaded into the
brain before the child's consciousness is even visible"
— Bruce H. Lipton
Between the ages of two and six, the brain operates mainly in theta waves (4–8 hertz) — the same brainwave frequency that hypnotherapists use to place someone in a highly suggestible state. At this stage, children absorb everything around them without filtering it through logic or critical thinking.
This means that both positive and harmful messages are imprinted deep in the subconscious mind. A child who is repeatedly told, “You are weak” or “You will never succeed,” takes these statements as the absolute truth. Once stored in the subconscious, these early programs can quietly influence thoughts, emotions and behavior for a lifetime.
The Body as a Barometer of the Subconscious
"People who live in the past sleep in the present. We cannot create a new future by
holding on to the emotions of the past."
— Joe Dispenza
When you encounter a familiar person, your body often reacts before your conscious mind does. Perhaps a colleague triggers a certain feeling — irritation, distrust — rooted in past experiences with them. These emotional responses are felt physically and often dictate behavior without conscious awareness.
Repeated emotional reactions form habits. If your perception of someone is based on outdated or incorrect memories, yet you continue to react in the same way, the situation remains unchanged. The energy you bring to the interaction reinforces the cycle.
Why We Keep Repeating the Past
If thoughts influence our future, but our feelings are tied to past memories, we risk recreating the same circumstances over and over again. Living in the same emotional state daily means living in the past — and it’s why some people face the same relationship challenges, workplace conflicts, or personal struggles repeatedly.
As neuroscientist Joe Dispenza explains:
“When we feel, we think in the past. These memories, processed as feelings, create thoughts that only relate to the past. Without awareness, we unconsciously keep producing more of what we already know.”
The Challenge of Awareness
Research shows that the conscious mind is active only about 5% of the time. The remaining 95% of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are driven by subconscious programs — which are rooted in the past.
If these programs are limiting or negative, they can hold us back without our even realizing it. The challenge is to bring these unconscious patterns into awareness, so they no longer quietly dictate the course of our lives.
