"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny."
— Mahatma Gandhi
Where Do Beliefs Come From?
Most beliefs are planted early in life, between ages two and six. During this crucial period, we absorb behaviors, ideas, and values from parents, teachers, and society without critical judgment. These early impressions become subconscious “programs,” shaping the way we see ourselves and the world.
Later in life, beliefs form when we repeat thoughts often enough that we accept them as truth. Stored deep in the subconscious, they run automatically, directing our choices and shaping our destiny.
The Power of Beliefs
"Many of our ideas and beliefs about ourselves and the world are so deeply embedded in us that we don't even recognize them as beliefs. Instead, we see them as the absolute truth."
— Rupert Spira
Beliefs can be constructive or destructive. In extreme cases, negative beliefs — such as those in radical ideologies — can lead to violence and division. These beliefs are not born from truth but implanted programs passed down by others.
The opposite is also true: positive beliefs, such as those held by Nelson Mandela, can change history. Despite 27 years in prison, his belief in freedom and reconciliation never wavered. His conviction shaped not only his own life but the future of South Africa.
Releasing False Beliefs
"Misery has only one cause: the false beliefs in your head, beliefs so widespread and widely accepted that you never question them."
— Anthony de Mello
False beliefs can be personal or collective. Some are cultural — like the idea that war is necessary for peace — while others are planted in childhood, such as “I’m not good enough.”
When these beliefs remain unchallenged, they define how we see ourselves and our lives. But once brought to light, their power fades. Awareness is the first step to replacing them with constructive beliefs that align with who we truly are.
The Impact on Self-Image
As children, many of us were told — directly or indirectly — to suppress our natural enthusiasm, creativity, or personality. These messages plant limiting beliefs that undermine our self-image. Over time, we may adapt to gain approval, while burying our true selves.
Sigmund Freud once said:
"Suppressed or unrealized emotions will never die. They are buried alive, and will emerge later in uglier ways."
Beliefs shape our self-image, and our self-image becomes the foundation of our lives. If it is rooted in false, limiting beliefs, happiness and growth are stifled.
Replacing Limiting Beliefs with Constructive Ones
As Rumi advised:
"Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop."
When we become conscious of limiting beliefs, we can let them go. For example, replacing “I’m not good enough” with “I have unique strengths, and I’m capable of growth.”
This shift creates a positive spiral. Instead of avoiding challenges, we embrace them. Instead of feeling unworthy, we see mistakes as opportunities to learn. Over time, constructive beliefs take root, and old, limiting beliefs fall away.
Question Everything
"The great philosophers encourage us to question everything. By questioning everything, we discover the limiting beliefs with which we hide the truth about ourselves and the world."
— Rhonda Byrne
By questioning our beliefs, we uncover which ones uplift us and which ones hold us back. Awareness gives us the freedom to choose beliefs that align with truth, growth, and our authentic selves.
